Jesse & Ann's Story

Most of us know that the country of India is a vast and wonderful country. With great potential and diverse problems, it has many needs. Jesse and Ann Williams went in 1971 to be part of India's solution.

"Honey,” said Jesse...."pack a few bags, get out the atlas. We're going to India."

As a professor of animal husbandry at the University of Minnesota, Jesse responded to the influence of his Methodist upbringing. He grew up in a small town in the U.S., hearing of missionaries and their enticing stories of far away places. He wanted to get out of town. Even though he was a transplanted Texan living in Minnesota, he was not fulfilled simply teaching in the U.S. He wanted to take his knowledge of animals and help... he wanted to do more!

So, "go" he and his wife did.

They set up living life as closely to the Indian locals as they could. Jesse believes that by enlisting the help of the local people, and sharing your vision with them, their passion rises, and solutions to problems are born.

Because of his success, when most of the 200 U.S. AID workers in India in the 1970's were required to go home, Williams was one of three who was invited to stay. He had the listening ear of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi any time he needed it. As a result of his work a university a 55,000 heifer dairy farm was created. This has made India one of the world's largest milk producers.

After a while, Ann heard those words again... "Honey,” said Jesse "pack a few bags, get out the atlas. We're going to. . ."

She has heard them 29 times in 25 years… as they have moved and lived and helped 29 different countries be more successful and productive.

They certainly did make a difference... all over the world.

In the year 2002, Jesse celebrated his 83rd birthday. Know how he celebrated? Well, first by getting his 2 artificial heart valves checkedout by his cardiologist, and then by packing those suitcases again. That year, he went to Cambodia just to see how he could help!

Amazing couple, huh? I would love to see their family photos!

Think about it though... a man and his wife spending their lifetime pursuing their dreams of helping people!!! They believed enough in the people of this world to share their knowledge and compassion by going to their countries and living among them.

Jeff's Story

He hadn’t felt this free for a long time. He marveled at how buoyant he felt – how he was almost floating with each bouncy step. Looking up at the sky he thought how much bluer it looked today – and how white the fleecy clouds were. Wow! And those flowers almost jumped out at him; their color was so bright. He realized he was wearing a huge grin on his face. A jaunty whistle escaped his lips.

Jeff Guidry was elated... he’d gotten the best news possible - his cancer was gone!! His first thought was taking "his girl" out for a celebration walk on their favorite mountain trail. His girl just happens to be a bald eagle.

Jeff named her Freedom over 10 years ago... and he and she are soul mates. Funny, how taking care of someone or something creates an unbreakable bond.

Jeff was on duty as an animal rescuer when she’d arrived... and he stayed with her from the very beginning. Jeff cared for Freedom... He cared for her through surgery, through bandaging, through tube feeding, and through the "touch and go" of long nights when no one knew if Freedom could survive her injuries.

For weeks, all Freedom could do was lie down. She was too weak to stand. It broke Jeff’s heart to see her just lay there and look up at him and the other rescuers with her big brown wild eyes that were supposed to be soaring over mountaintops, sailing through trees, and calling out high pitched wails to other eagles.

Euthanasia looked to be the only answer... for she seemed to be in much pain and recovery eluded her. It was even planned for one fateful Friday. But when the Thursday before rolled around, tears and smiles of JOY slowly spread from person to person as Freedom greeted them all from a standing position.

Whatever had kept her from living had changed. She was now ready to live – even if it was as a different bird. Her injured wings were too mangled for her to ever fly again. From this precarious place of healing, Freedom became an agent of change. She visited schools to help educate children and even wound up on the news, in the papers and TV. Freedom was a chosen bird... just as she had chosen life, Jeff chose her to become his partner.

"I knew I had been given a new chance on life," thought Jeff as his oncologist told him his cancer could not be found. Those words are the words every cancer patient desperately wants to hear.

Because Freedom and Jeff were a team, Jeff dreamed about her at night while he slept. He dreamed she was helping him now. Freedom helped him fight his cancer in his dreams.

As Jeff went to get his girl ready for a grateful celebratory walk up the pine laced hill... she stood still and pierced his eyes with hers. Looking deep at Jeff, she then in one magical swoop engulfed him in her wings... with both her wings stretched around to his back. Somehow, his shining majestic winged partner understood that Jeff's cancer was no longer in his body. Freedom knew that Jeff too would live.

What an honor for Jeff to have such a relationship with Freedom.

You know, you and I probably won't get to hold an eagle, much less get hugged by one! But we can continue to live with our arms wide open, our hearts wide open and our minds wide open to the opportunities each day brings. Jeff believed Freedom could live and she did. Then she gave back to him at a time he most needed a celebration. I know there are stories of dogs who rescued humans, cats who alerted their owners to smoke, and horses that refused to carry their riders past unknown dangers. I want you to think today that everywhere you go there are forces in this world bigger than we can see that are helping us as we journey through this earth.

The story of Jeff and Freedom is one of devotion, companionship and trust. I hope you have those things in your life. If not, then today, take the beginning steps to cultivate them. Reach out to a neighbor, a classmate, or a team member... You just never know what wonderful flight you might create.

Sometimes to have a friend we have to be a friend first. Make the first move. Hang on when it would be easier to walk away. I hope today you are encouraged by Jeff and Freedom... they believed in each other... and I want to remind you that…

Carlos' Story

Carlos closed his eyes and could see them as if he were sitting in their kitchens. He watched with anticipation as they patted the tortillas between their experienced hands. He could already smell and taste those wonderful corn patties as they cooked on the outdoor clay oven. As they cooked, their voices blended together in his memory as he heard lively tales of Mexico’s and family heroes.

He didn’t know which was better – eating his grandmothers’ spicy, flavorful meals and their handmade tortillas, or listening to their colorful stories. Both fed, nurtured and satisfied him.

Carlos was born in 1928 to a Mexican diplomat and grew up straddling multiple cultures. His pre-teen years were basically spent in Washington, D.C. where his father served as legal counsel to the Mexican embassy. During the summers while his U.S. friends were on vacation, Carlos was sent back to Mexico to live with his grandparents and attend school there.

From his grandmothers, Carlos learned Mexican history and folklore. He says, “They were the storehouse of these great tales of migrants, revolution, highway robberies, bandits, love affairs, ways of dressing, eating – they had the whole storehouse of the past in their heads and their hearts.”

From his elementary schooling in the U.S. he learned North American culture; from the dinner table he was introduced to and followed international politics.

Since members of the diplomatic corp are moved frequently, Carlos also lived in and adapted to life in Chile, Argentina and other South American countries. Because of this he learned many cultures and became acutely aware of the shared cultures of the Latin countries. “Being the son of a diplomat, you are constantly forced as a child to change schools, language, friends, ambience. So I had to go from Spanish to English to Portuguese, back to Spanish, back to English, make new friends – but it was challenging.”

Carlos became an avid reader and decided at an early age that he wanted to be a writer.At the age of 7 he was writing his own magazine and distributing it throughout the 7-stories of the apartment building in which they lived. Writing was in his blood. “I had published my first stories in Chile when I was 11 years old, and went on from there and won contests in high school.”

But his parents insisted he needed a career besides writing and wanted him to pursue a law degree. “. . . the pressure in Mexico at the time was if you are a writer, you will die of hunger, so you must have a professional title.” So Carlos attended the National University of Mexico, received his law degree in Switzerland and followed his father’s footsteps into diplomatic service.

But Carlos never lost his love of writing and continued to write while fulfilling his government duties. His first novel, Where the Air is Clear, allowed him to leave the foreign service and write full time.

Carlos Fuentes became more and more famous as both a writer and political commentator in South America and Spain and then his novel, The Old Gringo, became a best-seller (and a movie) in the United States. He was the first Mexican author to achieve this honor and distinction. Carlos is a prolific writer and popular speaker. He’s even taught at Cambridge, Harvard and Brown Universities.

When asked what he felt is the most important thing in life, Carlos replied “Life and love. The quality of love around me. Yes. And the quality of your life.”

When it comes right down to it, who we are and how we live and love is the most important thing. If we treat others the way we want to be treated; if we respect others and the planet on which we live; if we embrace our differences and choose to live in peace and AAharmony with one another, then we will give a lasting legacy to our world. I know it sounds simple, but the truth is...it IS simple!

Since I announced my recommendation for the Site Build It! service, dozens of people have signed up for it, and some are already well on their way to starting their own online businesses. If you’re one of them, I’m excited for you, and please do keep in touch to let me know how it goes for you.

I’ve also received some email from long-term SBI customers who saw my recommendation. The general consensus was that their system works for those who work it. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme, and it won’t help you quit your day job overnight, but it is an effective way to generate a good bit of supplemental income, commonly a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per site per month, but it’s definitely possible to make more than $10K per month if that’s your goal.

Some people mistakenly assumed that SBI is merely a self-publishing tool to put your own content online, like a blog-hosting service. That’s only a small part of what SBI does, and it’s not even the most important part. This confusion may have been partly my fault, since I probably didn’t explain it well. I encouraged people to visit the SBI web site directly to get that info, but in this article I’ll clarify what the service does, so you can decide whether it’s worth your time to use it.

What Is Site Build It?

I think the best way to describe Site Build It! is to compare it to a college course in online business, where the class project is to actually create your own income-generating web site. You’re provided with all the instruction, tools, and materials you need to succeed. Their suite of tools will handle the technical details for you, so you don’t have to become a master web programmer. You don’t even need to learn HTML or use an FTP program. Everything you need to do can be done via an online interface. If you wanted to, you could build an entire SBI site while working from a public library.

SBI teaches you to focus on income-generating activities while building your website. It helps you adopt the mindset of an entrepreneur, not merely someone who thinks it’s cool to post their own content on the Internet. The whole point of SBI is for you to build a website that makes you money.

More than 20 universities now teach college courses with SBI, and even more courses are in the works. SBI gives schools a way to give their business students (such as those in an MBA program) real-world experience in building a functional online business without having to become a master web programmer.

What to Expect When You Sign Up for Site Build It! - The First 10 Days

The first thing that will happen when you sign up for Site Build It! is that you’ll be doing a lot of reading. You’ll receive their step-by-step Action Guide, which breaks down the actions you need to take day by day. Think of this as your textbook on how to build a successful online business. They even have video versions of many of the lessons, so if you’re a visual learner, you can watch instead of read.

Topic selection and keyword research. Once you’ve done some reading and/or video watching, your first real action step will be to brainstorm ideas for your site and research potential topics. SBI provides a brainstorming tool for you to use as well as keyword research tools. SBI’s brainstorming tool will even help you generate your keyword list. You’ll investigate keyword supply, demand, and potential profitability. You’ll be guided to pick a topic that interests you but which can also generate decent income for you. This means you’ll reject ideas for topics that lack demand or already show entrenched competition. This is a really important process that will help you avoid launching a site that’s doomed from the beginning. Many bloggers I know could have saved themselves a lot of grief if they only took the time to carefully research their topics beforehand.

Monetization strategy. Next, you’ll plan your site’s monetization strategy. What mix of advertising, affiliate programs, product sales, e-commerce, auctions, referral fee, members-only resources, and other income sources will work best for the type of site you’re going to build? You’ll be guided to make intelligent choices here to generate multiple streams of income from your site instead of just randomly putting up ads.

Domain name registration. Once you’ve made all these decisions using the tools and guidance SBI provides, you’re ready to register your domain name. They provide the tools to do this, and your domain name is included as part of your SBI membership, so there are no extra fees. At this point you’re already up to Day 5 in their Action Guide.

Build the site skeleton. Now you’ll use their tools to build the framework for your site. They’ll help you build your About Us, Terms of Use, Disclaimer, Privacy Policy, and other standard pages, so there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. And you won’t have to worry about making stupid mistakes like broken links. You’ll also add a very basic amount of content to your site, and you’ll be educated on the important concept of pre-selling.

Early traffic building. By the end of the first week, you’ll use SBI’s tools to submit your site to various online directories and search engines, so you can start picking up free inbound links immediately. You’ll also learn a great deal about effective traffic building strategies for the long-term.

Making your site sticky. In Week 2 you’ll learn to build relationships with your visitors, so you can create a sticky site with consistent repeat traffic. You’ll learn about RSS feeds, contact forms, and e-zines. SBI provides all the tools you need to add these to your site without having to program them yourself. Learning to effectively manage your online business. The lessons and business-building process continues with learning about search engines, adding images to your site, and checking your traffic stats (what to look for and how to use it to your advantage).

Making money. Day 10 is the biggie. Now you’ll turn your fledgling web site into an income-generating business. This is where you put up the ads, affiliate links, etc. based on the monetization mix you selected earlier. You won’t have much traffic yet, so the income will be minimal at first, but you’ll have what you need in place to start earning money as your traffic grows.

Growing your traffic and income. After this you’ll continue to refine your site, build out the content, and gradually grow your traffic. In the long run, this is where you’ll spend the most time, by you’ll already have a solid foundation for future performance.

Support and encouragement. SBI’s style is very encouraging and motivating. If you visit their web site, that should be obvious. This isn’t just their sales style — it’s their service style as well. Even with the tools and guidance they provide, building an online business still requires a significant commitment on your part, so they do what they can to keep you motivated and moving forward toward your goal.

Ongoing advice. SBI provides members-only discussion forums for every part of this process as well as direct customer support, so if you need additional help or guidance, it’s just a click away. Their customers are really into co-mentoring, almost to the point of giving each other virtual group hugs. For example, they have a “Submit Site for Review” forum, where you can post a link to your new site and request feedback from other SBIers. This way you can get some extra eyes on your business from people who are much further along than you. Since SBI sites tend to be very niche, most members won’t be competitors of yours, so they’re happy to help.

Hopefully it’s obvious by now that SBI is a lot more than just a self-publishing tool. It’s a lot more like a college course in online business.

As I’ve noted before, if you’re an experienced web developer who already knows all this stuff, you don’t need SBI. You already got your education the hard way. But for $25/month, I think it’s a heck of a deal for most people.

SBI’s web site, by the way, has an Alexa ranking of 999, putting it in the top 1,000 web sites. This is an incredibly popular service, and with good reason. For every experienced web developer who has no need for SBI, there are countless others who’d love to supplement their income with a profitable online business… but they’ve been thwarted by technical hurdles. SBI removes those technical hurdles, making an online business accessible to a lot more people.

To build a successful online business, you don’t need to be a master technologist. You’re better off delegating that part of the business to someone else, so you can focus on the critical income-generating activities instead of wrestling with the underlying technology.

A Sample Site Build It! Website

An example of an actual SBI-built website is Anguilla-Beaches.com. This site was created by a teenage girl. Notice that it isn’t complicated or flashy. It has a very basic design, providing a fair amount of content on a very narrow topic. At first glance you might completely dismiss it. But this site generates thousands of dollars in monthly income for that teenage girl, mostly from referral commissions with a local realtor who sells property in Anguila. Nice little arrangement, wouldn’t you agree? As long as there are for-sale signs in Anguila, this girl can keep generating income from this site as-is.

You can certainly use SBI to make snazzier-looking sites if you so desire. Your design is limited only by your imagination, not by the tools. And you’re always free to use your own design tools if you prefer.

You’ll see a screen shot of each site’s home page, its URL, and its current Alexa ranking. Most are in the Alexa top 200,000. Feel free to visit those sites for design ideas and inspiration.

What many people don’t understand is that if you want to make money online, you don’t need to be a technology wiz or a web design expert. Obsessing over those things will only get in your way. Do you want people to visit your web site and say, “Wow! Cool site”? Or do you want a site that actually brings in good money, regardless of how it looks? To generate income you probably don’t want a hideous looking website, but it doesn’t have to be drop-dead gorgeous to achieve your financial goals. While you can use SBI to create a stunningly beautiful site, I suggest you focus your efforts on the 20% of activities that generate 80% of the value. Get something quick and dirty online, add solid content, and get it generating income for you. You can always improve your design later if necessary.

There are lots and lots of other SBI sites that generate solid income for their owners using a wide variety of monetization strategies. While Google Adsense is a reliable way to generate income from a high-traffic site like mine, it’s not the only option, and in many cases it isn’t even the best option. Many people think I make all my money from Adsense ads, but I’ve stated before Adsense is not my #1 income stream. It was a couple years ago, but not anymore.

Who Should Use Site Build It!, and Who Shouldn’t?

SBI is a great choice for someone who wants to build an income-generating online business in their spare time, but they don’t have the technical skills, the focus, or the willingness to do it on their own from scratch.

With SBI I wouldn’t expect you to build the next mega-traffic runaway hit. If you want to have a blog on your site or other dynamic content, SBI totally supports that. But its main purpose is to help you build small, tightly focused income generating sites. Such sites provide value to people by sharing good quality content, and they generate income from a variety of intelligent monetization strategies. You probably won’t be building a top-20,000 website. Instead you’ll be aiming for more of a top-500,000 site.

With SBI you won’t be aiming for massive amounts of generalist traffic like I do. You’ll be focused on a smaller, tighter niche that attracts highly targeted visitors. In a typical month, StevePavlina.com’s average income per visitor only averages a couple of pennies at most. You could easily do much better with a site that’s more tightly targeted than the vast field of personal development. So you won’t need nearly as much traffic as I do to generate a decent income.

It’s unlikely you’ll be earning five figures a month from a single site, but many SBIers have already reached that level. I’d say that realistically you can build a site that generates hundreds or thousands of dollars a month for you. I know that’s a solid goal for some people. There are no guarantees in life, but if you work the SBI system as instructed, you’ve got a fair shot at making a decent profit and enjoying a passive income stream for years to come.

The cool thing about building a profitable website is that once you’ve done it, it’s usually pretty easy to maintain, and it will still make you money even if you let it slide for a while. For example, if I did absolute nothing more with StevePavlina.com and just left the site online as-is without adding any new content, I expect it would eventually earn out well beyond a million dollars for me over the next few years. Don’t worry — I’m not going to abandon the site. I just want to emphasize that it’s really nice to own an income-generating asset that you can count on for years to come.

Many SBIers create multiple Site Build It! sites with different themes, which is an excellent strategy. The more darts you throw, the more chances you have of hitting a bull’s eye. Even if one of your darts misses its mark, you may still generate some income, just not as much as you’d hoped. That’s a disappointment most people can live with.

Your investment of time and money in this case is not a lot compared to the potential rewards. You’ll risk a lot more by taking a regular college class, where you’re more likely to be taught impractical info you’ll never use in the real world. At least with SBI, you know you’re learning grounded, practical skills you can immediately apply to your benefit.

If your ultimate goal is to become a top-500 blogger or to build a monstrous website that puts you on the cover of Fortune magazine, I don’t recommend SBI for you. In that case I’d recommend that you bite the bullet and commit to mastery of the technical side or at least hire someone who does. But this is very, very hard if you want to make substantial income, and the kind of business that SBI will encourage you to make is much more practical and accessible for most people. Also, you don’t have to commit to working hard on your business every week for years to come.

If you happen to be a work-at-home mom (WAHM), SBI has a page on their site just for you, based on their experience with other WAHMs who started successful Site Build It! businesses.

Tip: SBI also has a special finder page to help you quickly decide if you’re the right kind of person to succeed with their service. Think of it like the Sorting Hat from the Harry Potter books/movies. Just click the link on that page that best describes your particular situation (student, work at home, already have a struggling website, offline business owner, etc.). This is a good place to go if you quickly want to rule them out as a bad fit for you, or you may find a match and see that other people are already succeeding with situations similar to yours.

Does It Actually Work?

Yes, if you work it. SBI is great at coaching people to build websites in the top 1-3% traffic-wise. They even provide solid proof of this on their site, with a lengthy list of which of customers who’ve already achieved this goal, including URLs, screen shots, and Alexa rankings. As I’ve said many times before, when it comes to online business, income is a function of traffic. If you get the traffic, you’ll make the money. For most people building traffic is the key limiting factor, and this is where Site Build It! can help you tremendously.

I don’t want to give you unrealistic expectations; however, many of their customers do earn $10,000+ per month from their sites. You can use Site Build It! to make a very successful site if you’re really passionate about it, but I know from experience that most people aren’t going to aim that high. But those goals are entirely achievable if you’re committed.

Why Did I Quit My Day Job?

You may not realize it (although I suspect you do), but Site Build It! is much more than "the only all-in-one site-building, site-hosting, and site-marketing product" (I think that's what your site says!). It's actually a "9-to-5 life liberator."

Of course, I wish I really knew that before I tried it, as my story will tell.

In my former (pre-SBI) life, I was a regional manager for a medical imaging company. My headquarter's website was just not getting us any new customers (or leads). And that's how my first Site Build It! (SBI) website started.

Starting from scratch

I needed a way to generate leads to help me sell medical equipment in the office I had just opened in California for a medical distribution company based on the east coast. Basically, I figured that if I had control over web-based sales promotions and marketing programs, I could build sales significantly in my region. Otherwise, I was going to starve, because their expensive, fancy, gorgeous site was not sending me any business at all.

I built my SBI site with some pages based on keywords from the brainstorm tool in SBI and also built pages where the keyword was the model number of the products I sell (so obvious, yet so powerful). The pages I built based on keywords from SBI's brainstorm tool brought in traffic from my general target market. The traffic came because these keywords were in high demand by web searchers and not supplied by many websites on the net. The pages I built based on product model numbers brought in traffic because they were usually ranked very high in the search engines -- and that traffic, while lower, was super-targeted.

SBI submitted these web pages for me and then managed them to the top of the search engines rankings. You know what's great about being as "Net-dumb" as a guy like me? I just trusted SBI! to do its job, while I did mine! (I'll bet you get some smart tech-types who try to outguess SBI -- HA! HA!)

And boy, did SBI ever do its job. Anyone entering specific keywords, for example their specific model ultrasound machine (talk about a highly targeted lead!), finds my site at the end of their search. It really works well.

I was often ranked higher than the website of the company that manufactures the products I represent. In my business, this creates a lot of hot leads that usually turn into sales. And with a new customer ordering supplies, that means a significant future revenue stream as well.

SBI! really is the ultimate sales person's tool

Ken, I know you like to show Alexa rankings as proof of how well SBI! works, but people want to know how that translates into dollars. Yes, I know your sites explain how small businesses have to build the traffic first through great content, PREsell it and THEN monetize it, but people still want to know "how much money that Alexa ranking makes," if you know what I mean!

And that goes triple for us sales guys! So let me cut to the chase. My Alexa traffic ranking made it into the top 80,000, well within the Top 1% of all sites on the Net. What did that translate into, in business and dollars?

SBI! worked so well that I built a brand new sales office (with zero sales) to one with over $250,000/month in less than a year. In all, before I left them, I sold millions of dollars worth of product, at a 10% commission.

Actually, it worked a little too well (as far as head office must think, anyway). Why?

Well, I recently resigned from that medical distribution company because it was obvious I didn't need them. The company was getting the benefit of all the sales generated from my SBI traffic.

And here's the funny part. Head office couldn't understand how the heck my little site was generating all that business. The HQ Webmasters thought I was just lucky. (And I'll bet that's what they told management -- after all, they had to be doing something mysterious and difficult to earn their salaries, right?)

As Rodney Dangerfield would say, "I got no respect." Meanwhile, I was wishing I had known that SBI! would work this well before I took the job and started the site. And then it occurred to me -- "You know it now, so what are you going to do about it, Jerry." (I don't usually talk to myself, only in "EUREKA" moments.)

EUREKA! The Epiphany

I wanted to try it for myself, own my own business and my own life, so I went for it alone. (Well, not exactly alone, I also had my wife and SBI -- but never ask me to choose between them.) I knew that I could generate all the leads I need to make a living on my own.

And yes indeed -- my new company is already doing just fine because of the SBI website, which is barely underway but already pulling leads - www.sonomahealth.com. Sonomahealth.com will grow to be the cornerstone of how I earn a living as an independent medical distributor selling ultrasound systems and supplies at my new company, Sonoma Health Products.

Actually, I'm more of a broker or a sales agent than a distributor. To my customers, though, I look like a large national distributor with multiple warehouses across the country.

In fact, I do use several warehouses across the country, I just don't have to tie up any of my money in owning inventory because I let the "old school" distributors do that. I am a virtual distributor, a modern-day sales agency - as you can see, the actual inventory that I maintain fits into my garage!

I do my business successfully because I use Site Built It!. And I'll be the first to admit I don't even use all the features and capabilities of SBI to their full extent. SBI is such a powerful tool you just have to "kind of" know how to use it to be successful.

So because I "kind of" know how to use SBI, it helps me make me a very nice living in a company of my own. (Yes, I am one of those famously "lazy sales guys," I happily admit it -- but I prefer to think that I get the maximum reward for the minimum effort and SBI is an important part of that.)

When I think of all that SBI does for me,
I'm amazed that you sell it for peanuts

First, it brings in super-targeted leads. Do you have any idea how much time and energy I would have to spend to do that without a Web site? I choke to think about it.

Second, it can help you look like a big organization with multiple warehouses across the country even though you work in your bathrobe in the den. And, in one sense, I really do have warehouses all over our nation. I just don't own them and don't have to worry about them.

Of course, it's also a brochure for all my products. I don't have to spend a penny printing or mailing brochures. And I don't have to waste a second, either. As soon as a lead finds my content, there's the brochure, product information, content, etc.

Fourth, it can also actually sell the products, too, and collect the money electronically. On my first site, we took payment via PayPal, smooth as silk, easy as pie.

Fifth, you build a bond with your customers. We had started an e-zine, a very professional-looking newsletter, with the first site. Our customers love the updates, and by staying in front of their eyeballs, they thought of Jerry Mack when they thought about their next purchase.

Naturally, we'll be doing all this again, too, with Sonomahealth.com. (By the time you read this, Sonomahealth.com may already have an online store where the products are sold using PayPal.)

So how's it going?

SonomaHealth recently broke inside the Top 200,000 Sites at Alexa.com. It's really just getting going, and I'll be building it up, pulling in lots more traffic.

And yes... I can tell you what that "Top 200,000" means already for my wife (who is not only my lifetime partner, but business partner, too) and me... we're already averaging $10,000 in commissions per month. Ken, we're running... and this time we own it!

One step at a time, I'll build Sonomahealth.com far bigger than my first effort. And you know what... I could do this in any number of industries. There is simply no reason for me, or any other reasonably ambitious person who wants to own their own life, to work a 9-to-5 anymore.

Dear Ken,

Do you remember when you wrote this statement about SBI! users?

"...people who "took a chance" and then realized that their worlds had changed when they jumped into SBI! with both feet and ran with it."

Well, it could not be MORE true for me!

But it didn't start like that. Like so many others, I crawled on my knees, painfully and slowly, before running full-speed with SBI!.

In September, 2002, I had the idea to start a magazine for artists and writers. That's where it began.

An artist and writer myself, I had experienced a growing interest in using words and art together as an art form, and found the process of making words visual, and making art narrative, to be a very liberating and dynamic form of artistic expression.

But as much as I loved making words and art myself, what excited me even more was creating an opportunity for collaborations within a creative community. More and more, I was learning how much we long for community, how much it fuels us as we dance with the earth's tilt and embrace all that is possible in art and life.

I decided that the best way to ignite a communal spirit among artists, writers, and creative individuals was to publish a magazine of collaborative creative works. It would be called Artella ~ the waltz of words and art (named for "art" and "telling"). I would publish it monthly, alternating between print and electronic issues.

The full vision for this idea came to me remarkably quickly, with a velocity that took my breath away. I was in the hospital for a lengthy rehabilitation stay following knee replacement surgery, and my inspiration was no doubt aided by much spare time, sleepless nights, and heavy pain medications!!! By the time I was ready to come home, not only was my idea for Artella fully fleshed out, I had a solid step-by-step plan to make it happen.

The pain

I have a confession to make: Artella's first Web site was not with SBI. Although I had heard great things about SBI from Michael Holland, who runs several SBI sites, including www.home-decorating-made-easy.com and www.strike-it-niche.com, I didn't think I could afford it. (Actually, I didn't know that I could not afford not to have it, but you find these things out the hard way sometimes!).

Obviously, I knew SBI's price was great for what it offered, but I thought a better option would be to just save the money by doing it myself. So I built a site in a Web layout program and uploaded it to my ISP's free Web space.

I did a fairly decent job creating my first site, and looking back, I know that launching that simple site was an important step in keeping up my momentum. But I could have saved so much time and energy, and started earning money sooner, had I only started with my SBI site.

My first site was attractive and functional, but it was really cumbersome to update. I had no way of knowing what my stats were, but based on my newsletter mailing list, I knew there wasn't much traffic at all.

How frustrating to have an aesthetically beautiful site, with nobody to see it! Furthermore, my subscription sales to Artella were discouragingly modest. At my printing of Artella's first issue in February 2003, I had only 40 paid subscribers. I printed the copies from my home computer printer.

Fast forward to the present

Just a year later, I have over 1,000 paid subscribers to Artella, and a cornucopia of ancillary products that not only support the professional full-color printing of Artella the magazine, but also earn me a full-time income, and support a small staff to manage Artella's exciting expansion.

In one year's time, I went from fiddling around with a hobby to manifesting a full-time business doing what I love: celebrating the creative uniqueness in an ever-growing community of thousands of people all over the world, inspiring them to uncover their artistic spirits and dare to let their creative souls shine.

What happened to instigate this dramatic, life-enhancing change? The turning point was when I bought SBI. From there, my options were limitless, and everything changed.

Shortly after my first issue went out, I decided that a Web site that wasn't getting seen was hardly better than no Web site at all. So in March of 2003, I took the plunge and purchased SBI. As I said, I had heard great things about SBI, specifically from Michael Holland who has a few SBI sites.

It was not an easy decision

I was skeptical that I could get the visual feel that I wanted with a template-based builder. Little did I realize that SBI does not limit you to templates -- I had the option to "start from scratch" to create my own Web page elements for a truly one-of-a-kind look.

As a freelance writer, I did resonate with the concept that WORDS sell, not fancy graphics...and yet, since my product was an art/literary magazine and my audience was primarily artists, the graphics WERE uniquely important to me. I was doubtful...none of the sample sites I saw seemed to have the kind of aesthetic that I was looking for.

I was an atypical SBI customer, for sure.

I also was counting pennies, and the investment was a challenge, especially when this little hobby of mine was losing money, rather than earning any. But it was clear to me that if Artella was going to continue, something would have to change. So I did it...and it was the best decision I could have made.

I took the plunge -- "jumped in with both feet", as you say -- and as you can see, I used the SBI builder to make a beautiful site (www.ArtellaWordsAndArt.com). I was surprisingly impressed with the flexibility of the builder.

I was able to create a custom look and feel that has worked wonderfully for me. It constantly gets positive feedback from my visitors.

And now that SBI! is compatible with HTML editors, some of the more recently added pages of my site are uploaded HTML (for example, I wanted the pages in my creative marketplace, www.ArtellaWordsAndArt.com/shoppes.html, to have their own distinctive look).

I created these pages with an inexpensive "what you see is what you get" Web authoring program (IXLA Web Easy), and uploading the files to SBI is a snap. I was delightfully surprised when I saw that even when I uploaded my own HTML pages, SBI still analyzed the pages to ensure they were optimized for search engines!

But even though I now generate my own HTML files to upload some of my sub-site pages, my main site maintains the original look and feel that I created with SBI's builder -- yes, your customizable templates really are that good. And the flexibility of being able to do both my own HTML and/or template is AMAZING.

But how could an artist ever hope to master the engines?

SBI made it easy to learn how to optimize my pages for search engines. I quickly learned (actually SBI! took me by the hand and made the process "artist-proof"!) how to build traffic right into the content I was creating... as I created it.

The opt-in e-zine function was easy to use and it gave me hours of new free time; with my first Web site, I was handling all of my e-zine signups manually!

In a matter of just a few weeks, it was clear that my life would never be the same again.

Magic! The build begins

Visitors to my old site were so impressed with my new Web home, that they started spreading the word. The search engines started finding me, and so did my potential customers.

Since I had access to detailed site statistics, I could easily see which pages were working and which weren't, so I could make changes accordingly. It was as if SBI finally eliminated the guesswork in running an Internet business, so I could focus on generating new ideas, rather than worrying about the technical mechanics of my Web site.

The next phase of Artella was very exciting. With a sparkly new Web site, growing traffic numbers, and a newfound confidence, I let the brainstorming loose. The fact that SBI does not limit file size of Web sites made it easy to "think BIG"...it was very freeing to know that I could grow to any size and not have to pay additional fees for new file space.

My brainstorming was grounded by the question, "What can I offer to help serve the needs of writers, artists, and creative individuals?" By approaching the growth of Artella from that point, rather than looking simply at marketing strategies or "bottom-line" goals, I was able to synthesize all of my big ideas and authentically select the ones that were most appropriate.

The beginning of monetization

I started writing articles and giving free teleworkshops as a way to broaden the Artella community and get a sense of what was missing from the lives of creative people. After writing an article about non-linear goalsetting for creative people, I received over 100 emails within two days of publishing the article. That led me to creating my first e-course, "Goalar Energy: A Unique Guidance Program for Extraordinary Action".

From there, I developed more e-courses on a variety of topics, as well as eBooks, teleworkshops, and series of audio lectures. I started three online community forums to allow creative people to connect with one another, and I continued to listen to the challenges of these people's lives in order to discover needs that were not being met.

One such need was the lack of high-quality, affordable online marketing options for artists. Thanks to the features and flexibility of SBI, it was easy for me to launch a creative marketplace, The Shoppes of Artella, that sells over 250 handmade products by different artists, growing at rapid speed!

And by the way....I use the Paypal shopping cart with SBI to sell those 250+ products. It works great... so simple and easy, and effective and cheap!

I don't know why so many Web site owners make their lives so difficult -- the SBI! Offering a constantly- revolving roster of free products can be part of what SBI calls "PRE-selling"...but I just call it following my heart. This approach has never failed me, yet!

Before I started with my SBI site just short of a year ago, I had one single product -- a magazine for artists and writers that I was planning to have professionally printed in full color. People told me there was no way I could make it work, financially. Guess what? They actually were RIGHT!

Ken, I don't mind telling you...

If I were not with SBI, I'd most likely have to be paying more as my company and site grows.

If I were not with SBI, I'd have a much harder time getting the stellar search engine exposure that I have now.

If I were not with SBI, it would be far more difficult to coordinate Web updates with my tech support team, now that I have grown beyond being a one-woman enterprise (yay!)

There was no way that I could have built a financially profitable business with my magazine, on its own. How did "Rent a Villa in Tuscany" (our Web site) end up in the top 1% of the Internet and how did two Scottish designers end up living in a medieval village on top of a hill in Tuscany?

It's all Sophia Loren's fault! Well, sort of! If her childhood next door neighbor, Paolo, hadn't moved to Tuscany and if winemaker, Paolo, and his family hadn't renovated a farmhouse on a hillside and if they hadn't asked us how they could find rental clients for the farmhouse, then we would never have started "Rent a Villa in Tuscany".

In a strange way, all our previous experiences, which at first glance seems a million miles away from what we are doing now, were actually good preparation.

Both Fiona and I are art school graduates in Textile Design. For many years we ran our own knitwear design studio in a warehouse on the banks of the River Thames in London. It was probably around this time that the seeds of our fascination with Italy were sown. Over the years, we've also built up experience in sales, customer service, technical support and photography. These skills, combined with our fluency in Italian (we've now lived in Italy for 14 years), led us to look into the possibility of setting up a web based villa rental business.

Like thousands of other people round the globe, we'd read all about the power of the web and how it was possible to run a totally flexible, international business from a computer in your front room. Great, but the big question was, how?

OK, we were creative and I had played around with some programs designing a web site with photos of Rosie, our baby, but I didn't have a clue how to start setting up a "proper" site.

It was at this point, late one night, surfing through the thousands of "get rich quick" schemes on the net that I came across something that stood out as being very different, written by a Canadian Doctor called Ken Evoy. The product was called "Site Build It".

d.. A world famous New York photographer asked us to find a venue for his Tuscan photo course.

e.. An award winning journalist from a quality, Irish tabloid, the "Banbridge Leader", wants to do a feature on us. We reckon he just fancies a free holiday!

f.. We get daily calls from beekeepers, gardeners, carpenters, fashion designers, chemists, pizza makers, cheese makers, winemakers, web designers, piano players, 2nd hand car salesmen, and others who just happen to have a 14th century castle or two lying around, all desperate to be on the site.

g.. Last month, folks from over 60 countries looked at almost 30,000 pages of our site and we're not even finished building it yet.

Sounds like a dream! But the most bizarre thing of all is none of this would have been possible with out SBI. Sure, we were hungry, motivated, hard working, determined, had design skills, people skills and liked working with computers. We had researched our market and knew it had potential. BUT we don't have an exclusive on any of these. So why did we do it when 98% of small business on the net FAIL. What makes SBI different?

Kemmons Wilson's Story

Hello!

Kemmons Wilson had it tough growing up. His father died when he was nine months old. His young mother, only 18 years old, struggled to provide for her son. There were times there was so little money that they lived on a few pounds of dried butter beans for a week at a time. What got him through those times was his mother's love. Every night she sat her little boy on her lap and said, "You are designed for greatness and you can do anything in life if you're willing to work hard enough to get it."

At 14 years old, Kemmons was hit by a car. The doctors said he would never walk again. He chose to believe differently. He could do anything if he was willing to work hard enough. One year later, he returned to school - walking on his own. Then the Great Depression hit. His Mom lost her job along with millions of others. He made the decision to quit school and provide for the woman who had done so much for him. The day he quit school, he made it his mission in life to succeed. He vowed to never be poor again.

Kemmons experienced varying levels of success over the years but he had not achieved his goal of financial success when he took his wife and kids on a vacation in 1951. He was frustrated by the shoddy accommodations available for families, and furious they dared to charge $2 extra per child. He knew it was too expensive. (Remember this was 1951...)

His frustrating experience sparked an idea! He would offer an alternative - a hotel people could trust that would never charge extra for children. It was a completely new concept and most people predicted failure from the beginning.

Kemmons chose to believe differently. As with any business, he experienced enormous challenges. Money was short. Many times payment was an "IOU". He had to overcome one obstacle after another - choosing to believe in his success every single day.

15 years later, Holiday Inn was the largest hotel system in the world, with one of the most recognizable names in the business. Kemmons had a belief that carried him through? "You may not havestarted life in the best of circumstances. But if you can find amission in life worth working for and believe in yourself,nothing can stop you from achieving success."

Every generation always believes all the great ideas have already been taken. There is nothing left for you. Ridiculous! Your world is brimming with possibilities. Your job is to keep your mind and heart open. Find and identify that which fills a need and ignites your passion. Where you are in life today is not what is important. What's important is where you plan to be tomorrow; next year; 10 years from now. And no matter where that may be, always be aware of the fact that…

Wilma's Story

The sun rose and Wilma awoke. Pulling herself together she faced the glowing sunrise. Breathing in the fresh morning air she thought to herself. . . "No more days watching the old way of life die. No more days feeling the pointed barb of despair."

Wilma was alive in a time when the Native American culture was at a low point. Want to guess when that was? No, not in the 1700's or even the 1800's but in the 1980's! Less than forty years ago!!!

In fact, Wilma is still alive today. Although retired now, her dreams of a time where the men and women of the Cherokee nation returned to the traditional way of working together was very much realized because of her lifelong work.

For the Cherokee, teamwork and working together, both men and woman for the common good of the whole tribe was a traditional and an honored way of life. However, deep discouragement, broken promises and a completely male dominated culture had replaced their historical ways. Now the women were cast aside and forgotten. They lived hopeless and powerless. And the whole culture fought alcoholism and unemployment.

The year was 1987. Yes that is right. . . 1987!!! Remember she is the most celebrated Cherokee person in OUR lifetime. . .

Wilma dressed as the morning sun warmed the air. Preparing for her first official day as the elected Chief of the Nation, all of her life's work, hopes and beliefs lay around her mind. Her anticipation of a brighter future began to bubble up.

This day brought the end of much prejudice and ridicule, hardship and skepticism. She dressed and remembered. Wilma knew the sweetness of life could be short.

She remembered the car accident that killed her best friend and nearly killed her. She carries the scars of 17 surgeries. Each scar reminded her as she dressed, that life can only give back to you what you put into it.

She remembered the death threats she received as her popularity with her people grew and the tension grew with her enemies. She remembered buying new tires for her vehicle when its tires were slashed in protest.

She remembered 1985, when she first "inherited" the position as chief of the Cherokee nation. Inherited it because her boss left the position and she was the next in command.

However, this year, 1987, she was freely elected. . . and the very first female ever to hold that position. She knew her people had high expectations for her. She had high expectations. . . for all of them.

As she left for her office, her head held high with pride and hope, she offered silent thoughts of respect for the people who had gone before and deep gratefulness and sincere appreciation for the opportunity's ahead of her. She knew her day had finally come. She knew her Nation’s day had come as well.

Her high expectations, hard work and deep commitment paid off as she was elected twice more as the Nation’s chief.

Although her health no longer permits her from officially leading her people, her influence is still felt within the Nation. The Cherokee Nation is a vast organization, with over 140,000 in population, an annual budget of more than $75 million, and more than 1,200 employees spread over 7,000 square miles!!

Wilma's election and her tackling of their problems did much to restore and revive the Cherokee economy, education and equality. She restored faith to a desperate people.

She didn't take the easy way or the quick way. She took the way that was necessary and needed.

So many times we look for the quick way to make a difference.

Wilma is a wonderful reminder that often times it takes a willingness to work within the existing structure. It takes patience to wait for the opportunity that we desire to present itself. But by doing those two things, Wilma created an environment where now, present day young Cherokee girls dream of becoming chief. Before her election, those girls would never have believed that possible.

Today I encourage you to take the slow road. It just may be the road you are looking for to make that difference in your life. I encourage you to dream like Wilma did of the changes coming. I know you can do it because…
